The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines Kōan as:
‘a paradox to be meditated upon that is used to train Zen Buddhist monks to abandon ultimate dependence on reason and to force them into gaining sudden intuitive enlightenment.’
Those familiar with the works of electronic duo Will Weeks and Jim Bastow, known in the music world as Koan Sound, will know just how fitting a name like that is. With music ranging from some of the heaviest hitting wompy glitch on Funk Blaster to some of the most serene and peaceful yet other worldly sounds on Sanctuary EP with ASA, Koan Sound’s music is definitely something to be meditated upon.
Today, April 1st, Skrillex’s OWSLA records released Koan Sound’s brand new Dynasty EP. No matter how impressive each of Koan Sound’s releases have been, every new release just seems to get better and better, and Dynasty EP is no exception. Koan Sound continues to refine and evolve their sound. While Dynasty EP consists of only four tracks, it is clear that the time and attention spent on each track, each sound, each individual note, is what allows for such intricate mind bending outcomes. This new EP manages to keep a pretty upbeat tempo while at the same time maintaining a mellow introspective feel, it’s not easy to make a fast paced track that soothes the soul and relaxes mind, but Koan Sound has done it.
