The magicians behind the well known hip-hop magazine XXL pulled 11 rabbits out of their metaphorical Kangol hats for the 12th annual year of the print’s freshman class nomination. If you are an avid hip-hop fan, you already know how versatile the genre is becoming. Our latest nomination is in a whole different lane than 2018’s, pushing aside the trap rap focus and hitting hard on melodic frequencies and diving back into the roots of hip-hop; authenticity. 2019’s class features a few already highly notable names such as DaBaby, Comethazineand Blueface. The big dick energy continues as history is written with three female rappers knighted; Tierra Whack, Rico Nastyand Megan Thee Stallion. Two shows are popping off later this month on the 22nd and 25th, where DJ Scheme will be spinning the shows as well as the cyphers. The printed issue hits stands July 16th, and throughout the month XXL will be releasing mass footage of freestyles, interviews, behind the scenes, and more! Freshman, stay on that come up. Fans, stay on the lookout.

It is a glorious achievement to be featured on this young, but already notorious list. As the name suggests, being a freshman at any time or place is the notable beginning to any legacy. Stay in school, kids! As the year progresses we will all be waiting in high-key suspense until there is a new batch of fresh meat. Any of these young renegades could be defeated with a single devastating move. That being said, keep your eyes to the skies for these high flyers, ears to the tweeters and subwoofers for musical servings of bangers and mash, and prayers to the unseen for the protection of hip-hop’s soul.

Before I go, I’d like to give a massive, low frequency shoutout to DaBaby, Comethazine, Blueface, Tierra Whack, Rico Nasty, Megan Thee Stallion, YBN Cordae, Gunna, Roddy Rich, Lil Mosey, and YK Osiris! SHAKE THE BLOCK!
