Pretty Lights - A Color Map of the Sun

Any Pretty Lights Music (a.k.a. PLM) fan knows that historically, every single release created by Pretty Lights himself (as well as any artist that releases music via PLM Record Label) is free of charge. In other words, a PLM fan has never had to pay for a single album, a single track, a music video, etc., ever. He and his  PLM creation have had some of the biggest effects on the music industry as it once was before his arrival – revolutionizing the way that success and worth are perceived and evaluated industry-wide (not just within the world of EDM).

For the first time in PLM history, Derek Vincent Smith, a.k.a. Pretty Lights himself will once again pioneer an idea that will surely be imitated in the future by other artists, and perhaps even become the latest development in what is considered the ever-evolving “industry-norm.” He will once again be releasing his highly anticipated album, A Color Map of the Sun digitally and free of charge – no changes there. Additionally though, he will be releasing many different available options for a physical release at the same time for different price packages, as well as leaving the option to purchase a digital copy with bonus tracks, if you so choose.

A Color Map of the Sun comes out July 2nd. You can pre-order A Color Map of the Sun now to get the deluxe digital download on July 1, which is a day before the official release, including 3 bonus tracks and the companion album Live Studio Sessions from A Color Map of the Sun, at prettylightsmusic.com. The companion album/second disc part of the release is actually a compilation of all the vinyl he samples on the record. Furthermore, all of the samples included on the vinyl were of talented musicians recorded all across the country by Smith himself. He then took his personal samples and converted those into his own vinyl – and then samples his own personal vinyl collection. This is a HUGE bonus to the ever loyal and dedicated PLM fans – who eat up anything collectible that relates to Pretty Lights in a heartbeat or less, let alone something as unique and valuable musically as that!!!

Here is what Pretty Lights, a.k.a. Derek Vincent Smith had to say explaining the reasoning behind this move, in his own words:

This is the first time I am releasing an album as a physical product at the same time as a digital version. I have double disc CDs and full length vinyl records available with amazing hard cover book packaging that looks stunning and contains a 28 page photo booklet documenting much of the making of the album. The second disc of the double CD set contains 13 additional tracks straight off the vinyl acetates that I composed and created in order to make legit sounding samples for A Color Map of The Sun.

Like always, the album will be available in its entirety as a free download on the album’s release date via prettylightsmusic.com. For the first time however, I encourage you to purchase a copy of the album. There are two honest reasons for this. The main reason is that as an artist I have always reinvested any success I have directly back into the music, the show and the art that goes along with it. Secondly, this isn’t just an album; it is a massive collection of music beyond what is on the CDs that I will continue to put out after the album release. There is an insightful documentary film on the making of this project to be released alongside the launch of the album, as well as a music video for every song. They are all beautiful and uniquely unusual pieces of art.

This “album” is a multi-medium map of my mind and my self. It is personal and honest and I put everything into it. I have stayed on the path of being a completely independent musician and with the help of every supporter and friend, we have transformed a simple idea into a movement, a cultural beacon of light. If you can, I encourage you to purchase a digital or physical copy of A Color Map of the Sun. If not simply support by sharing the music and sharing the idea. If there is any success to be had from this album, it will go back into my rule bending, never ending quest to channel beauty and taste through music and art.

Either way, I made this music for everyone. Support this release and let’s show the world how we do. The time is now. – Derek Vincent Smith

Today, however, Pretty Lights threw a wrench in these written/stated plans for the release. A Color Map of the Sun is available NOW for a full-album stream ahead of the full release packages. Check out this long-awaited masterpiece, and be sure to check back again after the official packages have been released for surely more pleasant surprises from the Pretty Lights Music crew. ENJOY!
